BNZ KiwiSaver
About BNZ
BNZ (Bank of New Zealand) is one of New Zealand’s main banks, offering personal, business, and institutional financial services. Founded in 1861, it focuses on innovation, sustainability, and helping customers grow their financial wellbeing.
The BNZ KiwiSaver Scheme is managed by BNZ Investment Services Limited (BNZISL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Harbour Asset Management Limited. BNZISL is responsible for the investment strategy and governance of the scheme’s funds. The scheme is part of the broader BNZ group, which is ultimately owned by National Australia Bank.
BNZ KiwiSaver Scheme
The BNZ KiwiSaver Scheme offers a range of funds designed to cater to various risk appetites and investment goals. BNZ employs a combination of active and passive investment strategies, with active management primarily focused on New Zealand and Australian assets, while international investments are typically managed passively. The scheme emphasises low fees, with no monthly member fees and low annual management fees ranging from 0.30% to 0.45%.
How Does BNZ Invest?
BNZISL sets the investment strategies for each fund within the BNZ KiwiSaver Scheme. The approach involves a mix of active and passive management. Active management is applied to New Zealand and Australian assets to capitalize on local market opportunities, while international investments are generally managed passively to maintain cost efficiency. The funds are diversified across various asset classes, including cash, fixed interest, property, and equities, to balance risk and return.
Does BNZ Invest Responsibly?
BNZ incorporates responsible investment principles into its KiwiSaver Scheme. The Responsible Investment Policy outlines the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into the investment process. BNZISL actively excludes investments in sectors such as tobacco, controversial weapons (including cluster munitions and landmines), and nuclear weapons. In December 2021, BNZ extended its exclusions to companies involved in the production of fossil fuels, adult entertainment, and gambling operations and services. These changes have been implemented across all BNZ KiwiSaver Scheme funds and go beyond the requirements for default KiwiSaver funds.
